Roundtable: Singing from the Margins? The Cultural Worlds of Victorian Hymns

CraftingCommunitiesHymnsPoster.2.jpeg

Please join us for this lively Zoom roundtable, which brings together four scholars to talk about a diverse array of Victorian hymns, including hymns by Jewish, Ethical Culture, Black, and Animal Rights communities.

Attendees will listen to a recording of each speaker’s chosen hymn and then a brief presentation about each hymn’s cultural context and importance. The short presentations will be followed by a Q&A. Our speakers are:

  • Alisa Clapp-Itnyre, Indiana U East (on “Bands of Mercy Hymns and Songs for Children”);

  • Diana Maltz, Southern Oregon U (on “The Fisk Jubilee Singers in Britain, 1873”);

  • Heather Marcovitch, Red Deer C (on “Felix Adler and the Golden City”); and

  • Fred Roden, U of Connecticut (on “Missionary Judaism in Israel Zangwill’s ‘All the World (Shall Come to Serve Thee)’”).

Everyone is welcome at this free event!
